520 |a Women's military participation has attracted attention since the 1970s across the social sciences. But their participation within the European Union has been neglected as an object of inquiry. This book explores the policies adopted in the United Kingdom, Germany and France over the past 20 years and situates them in the unique context of the European Union, tracing variations between the three countries back to differences in their public cultures. In doing so, the book surveys the cultural, political and legal dimensions of the wider recruitment of women into this professional milieu that has remained a male stronghold. The book exposes the complex institutional frameworks within which national military apparatuses operate and shows that patterns of women's military participation vary in shape and content compared to the usual accounts given.
